Schools use a variety of measures to evaluate student learning and identify the key skills each student has mastered. Standardized assessments allow us to clearly pinpoint areas of strength and determine which skills still need development. These tools provide the most reliable data available, helping us create individualized plans that support your student’s continued growth and long-term success.

The State of Arizona does not have an Opt-Out policy for statewide standardized testing. The state statutes A.R.S. 15-102, A.R.S 1-601, and A.R.S. 1-602. The office of the Arizona Attorney General does have an opinion published on whether parents can opt their children out of state standardized assessments, and can be found at this website specifically addressing this topic.

Standardized Testing FAQs

What is the ELA score?

When the writing and reading tests are scored, the Arizona Department of Education will send Primavera one score: the English Language Arts (ELA) score. The ELA score will include both the writing and reading AASA test results, so it is very important to attempt both AASA tests in order to receive a complete ELA score. If only one test is attempted, there will be no score and the test will be marked as incomplete.

Does my student have to take the test(s)?

Yes, students enrolled with Primavera and in Grades 3-8, Grade 9, and Grade 11 will take the assessment test with Primavera. Primavera must comply with all state-mandated testing requirements. The Arizona Board of Education does not provide any publicly funded student the opportunity to opt out of state testing.

My student is a 10th grader, is he/she eligible to take the test?

No, 10th graders are not eligible to take ANY assessment tests, only 9th and 11th graders.

What action do I need to take to sign my student(s) up for testing?

Primavera uses a database to register all eligible students for state assessments automatically. No action is required on your part to register them. Guardians will be informed of the location and date of the test via email; be sure your email is updated in our student information system. Families will then have the opportunity to request a location change if desired. As the testing date nears, guardians will receive testing reminders and more detailed information regarding the day(s) of the test.

Are there any exemptions to the state testing requirement?

Primavera has a responsibility to both state and federal education agencies to administer the state test to at least 95% of our students. The Arizona Board of Education does not provide any publicly funded student the opportunity to opt out of state testing.

My child has an IEP or 504. Will they receive accommodations?

Each student with an IEP or 504 will receive any accommodations that are listed in his/her individual plan which was agreed upon at the most recent team meeting. Common accommodations may include: Extra time, breaks, small group testing, text-to-speech technology, use of a diabetic monitor, and access to snacks for medical needs. Please refer to your student’s plan or case manager for more information.

Should I log attendance during state testing week?

Yes. Time spent traveling to/from testing, test preparation, and actual time spent taking the test can count towards your attendance for that week.
