Primavera Online High School is Arizona’s largest summer school program. About 6,000 students each summer, to be more exact.

With summer courses being free, 100% online and just four weeks, it’s no wonder. But the major question is, “Will my school accept Primavera credits?”

By law, schools must accept credits earned through Primavera.

However, confusion among parents and students arises as many school registrars, administrators and counselors provide misinformation, stating that they do not allow concurrent enrollment or that they do not accept credits from Primavera.

These types of statements are untrue, and contrary to the law.

If you enroll with Primavera, you can receive credit. But we want to make the transition from Primavera back to your old school as smooth as possible. In order to make that happen, there are some steps you must follow. See below.

4 Steps for Transferring Primavera Summer School Credits to Your School

Before starting any courses with Primavera, talk to your current school counselor. Many are willing to work with Primavera, but some may try to grant elective credits (you can still earn a core credit, see below). It’s best to know beforehand.

Step 1: Talk With The Counselor At Your Current School

Schools in Arizona legally need to accept the credits you earn from Primavera.

Even so, some schools will still attempt to refuse Primavera earned credits.

On the other hand, several schools have no problem accepting our credits; it all depends on their policies. Before enrolling with Primavera, talk with your counselor. Ask for a hard copy of your school’s policies, so you are fully in the know before you starting a Primavera summer course.

Step 2: Enroll in a Primavera Summer School Course

Once you apply online, an advisor will talk with you and help you get you enrolled in the classes you need. For more detailed instructions, head to this blog post.

Step 3: Follow Up With Your Current School Counselor

If this is sounding like overkill, it is. But we have had several instances where a student’s counselor told them they can take a Primavera course, then say something different once that student wants credit.

Once you’ve enrolled with Primavera, reach out to your current school counselor a second time. Let them know that the exact course you’ve enrolled in. And better yet, get it in writing from your counselor that they will accept your Primavera courses as core credits.

The “core” portion is important. We’ll explain that later.

Step 4: After successfully completing a course, notify your counselor immediately (yes, again)

Seeing a pattern here?

Overcommunication is key in this process. Once you’ve completed a course with a passing grade, email or call your school counselor right away. You will need to send a transcript once your grade is recorded. Our enrollment advisors will help you with that.

Accepting Primavera Credits As Core vs. Elective Credits: What You Can Do

Arizona schools have to accept credits earned from Primavera. However, schools can decide to grant an elective credit for a core credit class.

What is a Core Credit?

To earn your high school diploma, there are courses you must take in order to graduate, and then there are courses that are electives. You need to take elective courses, but you have the flexibility to choose which classes you want with electives.

For example, there are specific math courses that you need in order to graduate. Those are considered core credits.

If you take a core credit course over the summer with Primavera, a school could choose to give you elective credit. This means you get credit toward your diploma, but not a math credit. In other words, you would have to retake the math course in order to graduate.

Do not let a school give you elective credit for a core credit class.

What if My School is Only Offering Elective Credits for a Core Class?

You can take action. If a school claims they are going to grant elective credit only, you have 10 days to demand a test.  Legally, the school must provide you an exam. If you pass that exam, the school has to grant you with a core credit.

This is why we say to reach out to your counselor immediately after finishing your Primavera course. If your counselor claims you’ll only get elective credit, you’ll want to take the test soon after you finish Primavera courses, so that the material is still fresh in your mind.

My son is taking Spanish 2 A/B this summer, he doesn’t need it to graduate high school, but he does need it for college.
Do we need to get it on his high school transcript or do we request a transcript from Primavera when we apply for college?

    Thanks.

Just wondering how he liked Spanish 2a and b? Have a son that is interested this Summer, but not great in Spanish how hard was this? Did he like format? Thanks Jada

    • Annalise says:

The Spanish classes are good, just need to focus well. As for the college thing, I would transfer the credits after you take them because it can help raise your GPA

    • Annalise says:

The classes are good and you do learn a lot, which I say writing the notes down is helpful for memory. As for the credits, I would transfer them after you complete the courses because if you get a good grade in them, you can raise your GPA which helps with colleges and scholarships.

  • Debbi says:

Do high schools have the same issues accepting 6 week class credits for core classes or just summer school classes?

    • Hi, Debbi. It depends on the school and its policies. While legally, all Arizona schools must accept credits earned from Primavera, some schools are easier to work with than others. Our enrollment advisors would be happy to help explain more at 480.456.6678, option 1.
